San Diego Area Open Blood Drives The American Red Cross asks eligible blood donors in central San Diego to make an appointment to donate blood at one of these open blood drives. Because residents in the fire areas are asked to stay off the roads, the Red Cross is limiting this appeal to people who live in central San Diego.
Any healthy person age 17 or older, weighing at least 110 pounds, and in good health may be able to donate blood. The fires caused the cancellation of all Red Cross blood drives in San Diego County 10/23 and 10/24, resulting in a loss of nearly 200 units of blood. Blood is needed for hospital patients throughout San Diego County, including those who have suffered burns in the fires. The Red Cross will open its Kearny Mesa blood center at 7675 Mesa College Drive (near the 163 Freeway) from 7:30 a.m. - 7:30 p.m. tomorrow (Tuesday). Los Angeles Area Blood Donors Needed as Fires Close Blood Drives Los Angeles – Wildfires have caused the cancellation of Red Cross blood drives in Southern California resulting in the loss of nearly 200 units of blood. The American Red Cross asks eligible blood donors in Los Angeles and Orange Counties to make an appointment to donate blood by calling 1.800.GIVE.LIFE. Blood is needed for hospital patients throughout Southern California, including those who have suffered burns in the fires. “The current wildfires have affected the collection of hundreds of units of blood,” states Clifford Numark, director of donor recruitment for American Red Cross Blood Services, Southern California Region. “We need people to step forward to donate blood and help make sure we have an adequate supply of blood and blood products for the patients in our local hospitals, as well as for those who might be directly affected by the fires.” Any healthy person age 17 or older, weighing at least 110 pounds, and in good health may be able to donate blood.
